The Man with Revolutionary Ideas

Innovator. Dreamer. Game Changer.

Anant’s vision to transform Bajaj Electricals into a flourishing business ahead of its time was driven by his sharp instinct. He could spot a great idea from miles and once he believed in it, there was no looking back.

Anant grew the business based on his ability to change and adapt. From the very day he joined Bajaj Electricals, he was ready to learn, solve problems and look at revolutionary ideas to bring about change and progress.

ANANT’S GURUS

Anant’s gurus illuminated his life’s journey.

Anant looked up to Jamnalal and Jankidevi Bajaj, two ardent followers of Gandhiji and his ideals. Anant was influenced by Gandhian values and used it as a guide all through his life.

Taking his First Steps

Taking his first steps.

The start of Anant’s Career Path was no bed of roses. He joined Bajaj Electricals as a trainee. In 1999, Anant made his first major move to fortify the company’s place in the industry. He played an instrumental role in setting up the Ranjangaon factory, a step that enabled the company to have greater control over the manufacturing process. Today, the factory manufactures transmission line towers, monopoles, high masts and many other products that help the company light up the nation.

Short-term goals were never Anant’s motivation. Instead, he nurtured a habit of planning for the road ahead. He launched an e-commerce website for Bajaj Electricals in 2003, a move that was way ahead of its time. The website and Ranjangaon factory stand testament to his foresightedness.

Anant achieved a lot in very less time due to his passion and sharp vision. He was very focused and clear in his vision for the company.

Building Partnerships

Building partnerships to uplift brand Bajaj Electricals

Anant was always on the lookout to grow his brand. In 2002, he signed an agreement with Morphy Richards which enabled Bajaj Electricals to tap into the premium appliances segment and consolidate its position in the small appliances market with a multi-brand strategy. He had an extremely cordial and personal relationship with the promoters, the Naughton family.

Anant was a dynamic individual and his enthusiasm and passion for the electrical business was infectious.

True Visionary

Shaping into a true visionary.

Anant was constantly experimenting and looking for new avenues. His vision extended to the global stage when Bajaj International Pvt. Ltd., the company’s export arm, made inroads into diverse businesses such as IT, Solar products (Sunsoko) and Entertainment (BEAMS - Bajaj Entertainment, Arts, Music & Sports). His inclination to look at the horizon for rising opportunities was an irreplaceable asset for Bajaj Electricals. Consequently in 2006, Anant was appointed as the Executive Director and helped propel the company’s turnover exponentially. At the time of his appointment, the turnover stood at ₹1000 crores. Today, it stands at an impressive ₹6,600 crores.

Celebrating Achievements

Forging a bond with his extended family.

Anant acknowledged that dealers were the backbone of the company. He would often visit them across India to understand how the company could help them achieve more. His frequent visits ensured he had his hand on the pulse of different markets.

Celebrating achievements together. His extended family.

Anant always worked for the benefit of the dealers and celebrated their accomplishments with them. It was his way to show appreciation, reward their hard work and strengthen the company’s association with the people who gave their heart and soul to ensure the steady growth of Bajaj Electricals.

Man who saw the Future

The man who saw the future.

Anant’s vision brought about positive change in the company. In 2009, he took the lead to implement Oracle ERP in an effort to drive growth, making Bajaj Electricals one of the few companies to take such an initiative. He also moved away from a traditional supply chain structure by consolidating it for enhanced efficiency. The intent was to focus on quality and making one product for the entire world.

The New Chapter

The new chapter of an illustrious journey.

Anant was appointed as the Joint Managing Director on April 01, 2012. However Anant, an ever eager learner, always worked towards self-improvement and successfully completed a 3-year Owner/President Management Program from Harvard Business School in 2013.

Building the Brand

75 years, 1400 products, Bajaj Electricals, Shine On.

After 75 years of shining on, Bajaj Electricals had become a household name in India. Anant wanted to celebrate the company’s 75 years with a two-fold objective: To highlight the scale the company had achieved and to establish a connect with the new generation. And so on its 75th Anniversary, he launched the ‘Shine On’ campaign.

Celebrating a glorious past with an eye on the future.

The legacy that guided his future.

The ‘Shine On’ campaign was an ode to a dream that had flourished. It was a look at the history of the company and the scale of its reach in a youthful and charming way. While it touched on the brand’s heritage, it was a celebration of the road ahead. The campaign was extremely well received and resonated with the young and the old.

Saluting the progressive woman with 'We are family'.

Anant wanted to consolidate the brand image of Bajaj Electricals across verticals and through this objective, the ‘We Are Family’ campaign was born. Anant also recognised the changing role of women in the country and was keen to portray today’s progressive woman in the campaign.

Connecting with young India.

India has over 600 million young people. Our nation’s unique demographic structure was one of the key reasons why Anant wanted the brand to reinvent itself. In an effort to connect with the youth, he partnered with renowned singer, Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour in 2017 as its exclusive lighting partner.

Lighting up the way for young artists.

Anant’s interest in art and his desire to make the brand reach out to the youth came together at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, a hotpot of culture, arts and literature.

Championing the voice of the youth.

Anant was a firm believer that the youth held huge potential. To unleash it, he created 15 cross-functional Strategic Management teams with young team members who were given a voice in the decision making process.

Anant partnered with KidZania, a platform that helps children showcase their creative side.
He wanted the brand to be a familiar name across all age groups and extended the company’s association with activities where even children were involved.

Spreading the Magic of Light.

The power infrastructure that Bajaj Electricals lays across India has a huge social and economic impact. Anant wanted to share real life stories of how the company’s efforts played a role in empowering people. This sparked the birth of the ‘Magic of Light’ campaign.

The stories were told through the medium of animation as fables, and later revealed to be inspired by true stories. It showed the possibility of dreams turning into reality. The campaign highlighted the work that goes into making India shine, and that for Bajaj Electricals, it isn’t just about lighting up homes and neighbourhoods. It’s about lighting up dreams.

Making brand Bajaj a shining force.

Anant always looked to increase brand visibility through unconventional methods. He wanted the brand to be an omnipresent force. While other brands stuck to tried and tested ways, Anant refused to go down the same lane. In 2015, he forged an association with the Pro Kabaddi League during its nascent stage, as he believed the sport was sure to gain popularity. His foresightedness and instinct proved to be a great guide as the league went on to become one of the most followed sports in India, second only to cricket.

He was deeply involved with the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy and Premier Badminton League. He aspired to strengthen the sport at the grassroots level by nurturing young talent. The Academy hosted the Yonex Sunrise Anant Bajaj Memorial - All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2019 in his honour.

Innovation goes under the spotlight.

Bajaj Electricals got global exposure and showcased its technologically advanced solutions in Home Automation, Connected Lighting and Engineering projects, under the theme ‘Smart Indoors and Connected Outdoors’.

Illuminating the global stage in Germany.

Running to empower women through Pinkathon.

Taking the ‘We are Family’ campaign forward, Anant partnered with Pinkathon, an initiative that spreads awareness on breast cancer. He even urged all the men at Bajaj Electricals to make their spouses, mothers, sisters, relatives and female friends participate in the marathon to support the cause.

I was touched by his interest in the cause and his concern for women’s wellness. He understood the value and philosophy of Pinkathon perfectly and to us, he was a great champion and a great friend.

- Milind Soman

Founder - Pinkathon

Pinkathon was a means to empower women. It asked them to let go of their inhibitions. The ‘Leave it behind’ message integrated in the marathon asked women to leave behind all the things that hindered their self-growth. For instance, many women didn’t take up running as they lacked confidence. Pinkathon helped women be more self-assured and take positive strides towards building their confidence.

Pioneering Innovation

Embracing technology to reach the masses.

In 2014, he spearheaded Project Evolve, a complete digital transformation initiative to make the company future ready. The Digital Engagement Centre was a first of its kind in-house setup for Social Listening and Online Reputation Management. It greatly enhanced the company’s ability to deep dive into customer needs and was a way to use technology to reach the masses.

He had a strong conviction of how technology will empower and transform India and the personal role each of us will have in creating impact. As we understand the secrets of the DNA, we discussed how this technology would allow India and every part of the world to leapfrog to the future in healthcare, in a similar way to how mobile phones have transformed India.

A Man with no false mask

A man with no false mask.

As an individual, Anant was extremely forthright. He often said, “It’s important to innovate and create, and that’s how the world will recognise you”.

I never failed to enjoy the brief exchanges between us. As Anant grew and joined his family business, I continued to value his frank advice, which came unfettered by any ulterior motive or bias.

Anant's love for running made him participate in sporting events and marathons across the globe to extend his wholehearted support to their cause.

He was a great admirer of Steve Jobs and drew inspiration from his approach to innovation and design. Apple products were his weakness as he loved their ingenuity and shared the company’s passion of doing things differently.

He was as passionate about running as he was about growing the business. He often came up with very out of the box ideas which were unconventional yet effective.

Pursuing Excellence

Taking the hard road to meet success.

The TOC (Theory of Constraints) Model was implemented by Anant as a result of his futuristic thought process. He took some tough calls and went ahead with his decision despite facing many challenges. Today, it enables the company to service over 2 lakh counters on a weekly basis.

If the word ‘fearless’ was coined for someone, then he must be right at the top of the list of candidates. A son, a husband, a father, a leader, a friend to me, but most of all a child who refused to grow up. I will miss those spontaneous breakout chats about all things Apple and Theory of Constraints.

Bajaj Electricals won the prestigious POOGI (Process of Ongoing Improvement) award at TOCICO (Theory of Constraints International Certification Organization) International Conference 2017 in Berlin, Germany.
